Design of light weight corrosion free light weight FRP composite hybridized with industrial waste materials
In recent decades, industrial wastes like fly ash and red mud are imposing generous threat towards proper waste management in several metallurgical plants of Odisha (Jharsuguda, Rourkela, NALCO, Lanjigarh, Rajgangpur). Non-utilization and improper disposal of such industrial wastes can cause environmental pollution and even can cause severe health issues in the disposal locations. Despite of some steps for proper utilization of such wastes, as taken by Government of Odisha, still some other alternatives are required, keeping in view about huge amount of generation of these industrial wastes per year. Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite, with light weight, corrosion free, non-catastrophic failure and high specific strength, suits for civil-infrastructure and aerospace industries. However, FRP composites suffer thermo-mechanical degradation subject to exposure in moisture and temperature variations. All these problems can be solved by hybridizing the FRP composite with incorporation of fine dispersed particulate filler. Industrial particulate waste (fly ash and red mud) can pay the potential role for it. Hybridization of FRP composite with such hazardous waste materials can fulfill “waste to wealth” and can also solve the critical problems with two phase fibrous polymer composite. Dispersion of the oxide contents of metals/semi metals of fly ash and red mud in polymer can obstruct inter-laminar crack propagation in FRP composite and design stress can be improved to a desired extent. Thus, the present proposal aims to design hybrid FRP composite with incorporation of industrial waste fillers and to access its durability under critical environmental severities (hygrothermal and thermal shock conditioning). This work is sponsored by OSHEC, Odisha in the scheme of OURIIP.
Thermo-mechanical performance of FRP composite with/without hybridization of nano fillers subject to environmental ageing and EM-radiation post-curing strengthening
Currently, Fibrous polymer Composites are the most promising material to be used as light weight and corrosion free components. Such components come in contact with harsh environmental ageing combined with humidity, temperature fluctuations, environmental alterations, outdoors ageing for which the thermo-mechanical integrity is degraded up to considerable extent. Meanwhile, due to improper curing in polymer matrix through some conventional methods, interfacial property is not achieved up to that much as compared to the required design stress of the component. Also, generation of residual stress, mostly in two phase FRP composite, is a threat for its potential use. Thus, the objective of the research group is to investigate the extent of thermo-mechanical degradation of FRP composite subject to prolonged exposure to various stringent environmental ageing like hygrothermal, salt water, thermal shock, outdoors ageing, through qualitative/quantitative aspect of research by adopting various Material characterizations. The primary focus of the research group is to investigate the extent of damage in conventional FRP composite subject to various critical environmental exposure combined with any kind of severities. Keeping in record of the extent of damage, the property enhancement in FRP composite is also a primary job of the research group. For this, various filler materials in both bulk and nano size are selected by the group. Then, we hybridize such FRP composite by incorporation of such fillers. The group also optimizes the extent of filler material required to impose maximum thermal and mechanical property in such hybrid FRP composite. Not only limited to this, the group also focuses on the improvement in FRP composite through various secondary polymerization post-curing process. For the lab work also includes the irradiation of such FRP composites with/without filler hybridization to various electromagnetic radiations those can suit for the enhancing agent as well as post-curing strengthening agent. The details of the research with critical key points will be discussed by a fruitful discussion with the research group.
